The more combinations there were, the higher the running costs. F1 has been on a drive for the past few season to reduce running costs and to encourage newcomers into the mix. Hence the 3 year engine freeze, less testing, reducing tyre manufactures to one, limited revs and reduced engine size.

Also now with the new rules there are standard compounds instead of individual, specialised ones per racetrack - So for example the soft compound for Melbourne will be the same for Sepang. This makes a huge difference compared to last year where you would have special compounds per racetrack for optimum performance.

In the real world yes it is different, but then this is Formula 1, the suppose pinnacle of motorsport. After all we all can't have an engine change whenever we please can we? Nor can we have a team of mechanics at our every whim.

F1 is all about performance on the track and maximising the package they have to win races. Sadly it doesn't trickle down to our own cars when we go to the supermarket, even though that would be pretty amazing!

A bit more on the new tyre rule!

One manufacturer has four different tyre hardnesses for F1 but is only allowed to use two in any one race, to ‘give an exciting finish”., and ensure that team tactics play a part.

It was better when there were two manufacturers, more combinations. It’s all a bit artificial isn’t it?

What resemblance does this have to the real world, where you can pick from hundreds of different tyres, not knowing how “hard” they are.
You can only rely on tyre surveys from real people, and acquire a bit of knowledge on how the tyre people achieve these different compounds. Our blog (http://tyres.wordpress.com) gives a bit of background on this. We have recently posted an article about tyres and Formula 1 (http://tyres.wordpress.com/2007/03/19/tyres-and-formula-1)!

Now O_o...wow !

That-is-an-Article.

Exciting, extraordinarily well documented, written with a nice touch, that could well get the strangers to F1 to join the fans.

walking leaf, you are incredible.
