Today sees the release of the hit MMO, World of Warcraft’s very own miniatures game. Created by Upper Deck Entertainment, the company behind the WoW TCG and various sporting memorabilia, the game offers players a recreation of the MMO’s gameplay for the tabletop.

Combining the use of figures and terrain pieces, players can take the role of a single adventurer or of a party of five, creating teams of different classes reminiscent of the online game. The figures are produced in 40mm scale, which is larger than the minatures norm, allowing greater detail. Players will be able to form parties from three factions; alliance, horde, and monster. Iconic figures from the Warcraft universe will be available, from the Orc warchief, Thrall, to the Night Elf priestess, Tyrande Whisperwind.

Currently available for purchase is a starter set; containing four fixed miniatures (two Horde, two Alliance), six dice, character cards, Action Bar cards, six Ubase miniatures bases, and a two-sided map. Also on sale is a booster pack, holding three random figures, all from the same faction. December 2008 will see the release of the Deluxe Edition, which will contain new maps, scenarios, and randomised characters from all three factions. Upper Deck also plan to launch a line of raid sets, featuring sculpts of iconic bosses.

The entire Core Set has 66 minis to collect, 22 from each faction. Two miniatures from each faction are considered to be ‘epic’, and these will represent the big names from the MMO.
