CHAOS;HEAD based on the psychological horror game by Nitroplus from Madhouse Studios. The main protagonist is Takumi Nishijou a very withdrawn and pretty delusional high school student. Within his town there appears to be a sadistic serial killer on the loose with the victims being mutilated in a progressively more gruesome fashion.
While chatting online and being cuddled by an imaginary anime girl, someone contacts Takumi with a link to an image. As his chat window becomes flooded with URL’s Takumi accidentally clicks one and what’s revealed shocks him to the core. The following day while walking down some dark alleys (as you do) Takumi comes across a mysterious girl with pink hair who is currently mutilating the body of a male that she has managed to attach to the wall with metal stakes. As the girl turns she greets Takumi with his name and claims she wanted to meet him. Takumi runs off in a mad panic unsure of what is real and what is just one of his delusions. After several other mysterious run ins with girls who appear to be more than they seem, or at least they are in Takumi’s head. The closing image is Takumi sitting down for a seemingly normal day at school and who should occupy the seat next to him, none other than the girl with pink hair we saw earlier.
The animation production is good but it isn’t great, or maybe I just don’t like the moe character designs, As first episodes go I did find it all pretty confusing, especially given Takumi’s delusions as you really don’t know whats real and what’s, well all in his head, On a side note within the game apparently you can actually control Takumi’s delusions which is one of the major appeals of this game. The OP is “F.D.D.” by Kanako Ito is actually very good with the girls most of whom we are yet to meet appearing with very stylized weapons. The ED “Super Special” by Seira Kagami actually deeply disturbed me, not due to the song as such but after what I had just seen how on earth can this anime end on something so bouncy and catchy, with all the girls appearing with angel wings. I’m guessing this is a ploy to disturb the viewer even more than previously, or at least it worked with me. As I think back actually there were feathers when one of the girls weapons appeared in the initial animation before the credits, so maybe they are angels of death.
This has to be the one anime this season where I was left thinking what on earth did I just watch. I’m not sure who’s more disturbed me or Takumi. I will add here I really don’t like the character of Takumi much, I’m struggling to see any likable features about him, besides he gives me the creeps. At least it was hinted in the opener he must meet a really bloody ending so maybe there is hope, if he irritates me too much. I’m getting a very distinctive Higurashi vibe from this, cue psychotic cackling girls with very sharp implements and lots of torture glossed over with the whole what is real and what is a delusion imagery. I’m also very intrigued by the number of references there are to eyes and angels, I tend to like anything that is moderately mysterious. I have a feeling this anime will really pack a punch, the mind boggles at how we can have a harem with serial killers but I’m impressed enough with the first episode to follow the series and see what all the fuss is about.
