The Vampire Bishies with blazing red light bulb eyes are back, I can hear all the fan girls squeeing from here. Vampire Knight Guilty is the second season adaptation of the very popular shoujo manga by Hino Matsuri and is animated by Studio DEEN. This appears to be continuing from where the first season left off and from what I can tell at least, not much has really changed. The love triangle between Yuki, Zero and Kaname is still pretty apparent. We are treated to some more stunning OP credits with “Rondo” by ON/OFF adding and eerie edge and “Suna no O-shiro” by Kanon Wakeshima being the ED song. I especially like the imagery Vampire Knight uses for their credit sequences, although not quite as vivid as last seasons ‘Alice in Wonderland-esq’ Still doll ED the blood butterfly was particularly stunning.
The series begins with Zero making a return to Cross Academy, it appears he’s been in solitary confinement for quite some time. Zero also seems pretty much back to normal after having drunk Kaname’s blood at the end of last season, shame really I was enjoying seeing the raw animal side of him. Yuki seems happy to have Zero back at the academy again but she appears to be struggling with his presence as well, their relationship has definitely changed from before, Yuki takes the initiative as always and attempts to make everything normal again between the pair of them and offers to let Zero suck her blood as he did previously. Zero promptly refuses, so possibly he is back to normal and not giving in to his animal instincts.
We are then treated to quite a few flash backs to the previous season, I’m guessing that’s for anyone who has managed to forget the plot of the first season in the last couple of months. The story appears to be taking a darker turn as Zero is being pursued due to the murder of the pure blood Shizuka last season, Kaname steps in to defend Zero along with the other vampires of Cross Academy, it appears he may possibly have some new allies, but is all as it seems?
This series marks a welcome return for many a shoujo fan. As you can see from my previous review of the first season, it didn’t exactly strike me as anything special but I really wanted to like it. This really feels like a second half of the first season as opposed to a new season altogether, as the story literally just continues from where it ended previously. If you liked the first season you’ll love this, as for my thoughts on this new series I can’t see much has changed it’s still relatively uneventful but possibly the love triangle will progress forward, I’ll probably watch this season not terribly sure if I’ll like it anymore than I did previously though.
