Since its announcement in March 2007, Eidos Montreal has been keeping a tight lid on details concerning Deus Ex 3, the latest in the series of popular role playing game-first person shooter hybrids. A teaser trailer was revealed in November 2007 but not much has been seen since. That is, until PC Zone’s 200th issue released details on the game to subscribers this morning.
Deus Ex 3 combines the artistic styles of the renaissance and cyberpunk, melding them to create an atmospheric world. The game has been confirmed as a prequel and is set in 2027, casting the player as Joe Adam Jensen, a private security officer who works at a technology lab responsible for biomechanical augmentation. As black ops commandos break into the lab’s headquarters, the player is thrown head-first into the conspiracy.

Although creative directors from the first two Deus Ex games, Harvey Smith and Warren Spector, will not be working on the project, original writer Sheldon Pacotti has been brought in to consult on the story.
The developers have said they have learnt from Deus Ex 2 and several changes are in store for the new addition to the series. Character stats no longer contribute to combat, instead influencing customisable and upgradeable weaponry. Stealth has also changed and will no longer be dependant on shadows, forcing the player to use cover to hide fron enemies. Augmentations, an identifying part of the previous games, have also been confirmed. There will be 20, one allowing the player to punch through walls to attack foes, whilst another will shoot tentacles from the character’s back when jumping from a height to ensure no damage from the fall.
This information has received mixed responses from fans of the series; many on the official Deus Ex 3 forums not liking the change in direction the game appears to be heading in, comparing some of its aspects to first person shooter, Call of Duty.
Deus Ex 3 is set for release on the PC, XBox360 and PS3 some time in 2009.
