Disaster: Day of Crisis Preview on Nintendo Wii

When the Nintendo Wii was announced, this was supposed to be one of the launch titles that would help diversify and show off the unique controls offered by the console. However, I remember it being shelved along with HAMMMER but it seems to have survived.

Developed by Monolifh Soft (XenoSaga, Baten Kaitos) the game looks to have been slightly overhauled graphically since I last saw it, which is a good thing. The game is developed around surviving, in particular the natural disasters that occur during the game whilst fighting terrorists who’s aim is to secure a nuclear weapon to cause global chaos. Luckily for you, you control a character called Ray, a former elite task force member who is well versed in armed combat.

The gameplay incorporates the usual action stunts such as shooting but since you are aiming to survive you will also meet other characters that are in need of your assistance to escape or indeed to stay alive, by performing mini games to perform CPR or simply patching them up with some bandages.

The games themselves seem pretty easy such as testing your timing or accuracy which would provide light relief from the main gamplay of exploring and defeating the enemies with a whole raft of weapons available. Each weapon has individual statistics for strengths and weaknesses as you use the D-Pad to switch between them on the fly, d epending on the situation you find yourself in. The game uses the nunchuck as well as the Wii remote to control basic movement and context sensitive moves, such as searching bodies, picking up items, shooting etc.

It looks to blend many gaming modes into the mix however will the main gameplay be enough to make the title stand out from the crowd. A lot depends on the storyline to drive the game and indeed how each of the elements from managing weapons, resources and health to survive the risks that Ray will encounter whilst trying to stay alive. The game seems to be strictly one player and the levels could be short and sweet, for gamers to aim for high scores and fast completion times, much like Trauma Center.

In this day an age of HD graphics the game itself does not stand too well however if the gameplay is engaging enough it could be a very nice welcome away from the standard casual games that the consoleĀ  is fast becoming known for. If this fails, then how about a new XenoSaga game on the Nintendo Wii Monolith? We can only hope!
