Windows Vista and the EyeToy
Writing by NeoBlade on Monday, 29 of October , 2007 at 11:20 am
I wrote previously on eMagi about how to use your Playstation 2 Eyetoy camera under WindowsXP. Well the same process is required under Windows Vista. There has been some requests and since I’m now on Vista full time here is a walk through!
EDIT: It is NOT x64 compatible and I very much doubt such a driver will be created…
EDIT2: For faster support for any issues please post here and I will get back to you!
First up grab the drivers that I linked to here…
Old EyeToy - SLEH-000-30
Silver EyeToy -SLEH-00031
Once downloaded extract the files somewhere on your computer. Remember where you put it!
Now, plug in your EyeToy, Vista should ask you what to do.

Click on “Don’t show this message again for this device”
Now, right click on My Computer then click on Properties. Click on Device Manager.
Under the “Other Devices” header, you should see the “Eyetoy USB Camera Namtai” device. Right Click on this and click on Properties.
Click on “Re-install Driver” and then “Browse for my driver software“.
Remember where you extracted the downloaded files earlier on? Well its time to click on Browse and point it to the folder! Once done, click on “Next“.
Vista will ask a question to verify the driver. Click on “Install this driver software anyway“. It will then start installing. Just be patient!
Once done you should see this screen, click on Close.
A “sel3110″ window will pop up, just click on OK.
Another window will pop up. If you are in Europe then click Yes for the 50Hz option. If you are in Japan/USA then click on No.
Job done! You have now installed the Sony Eyetoy under Windows Vista to use as a webcam! To test it, open the folder that you downloaded here on eMagi and look for a file called “VIDCAP32“. Double click on it and you should see your Eyetoy working ^_^
Enjoy!

Ah awesome, loads of people asked about this.
So the real question is how are you liking vista ?
I’m still with good ol’ XP can’t see me upgrading this year to be honest, I find it a lard ass.
I like what they have done with office vista its quite impressive the new menu system, although i have to admit I haven’t used it for daily work. I was just helping the boss insert a text box in a word document.

I can’t get it to work. It automatically installs it as a sound device.

Hi Murphman12, I’ll assume that since you said it automatically installs as a sound device then Vista is not giving you the first option in the walkthrough.
Click on Start and in the searchbar type in “Device Manager” and open it. Alternatively you can Right click on My Computer > Properties > Device Manager.
Plug in the Eyetoy and you should see it pop up. If not open the Imaging Devices tab and it should be in there. If it is, right click and Un-install. Click on Action then “Scan for Hardware Changes” and do the walkthrough again.
If it is not in Imaging Devices, then find out where it was installed. You said sound devices then have a look there. Find it and Uninstall the device. Click on Action > Scan for Hardware changes and try the walkthrough again ^_^

Anyway of making this driver x64 compatible for vista? It’s the only bit of hardware I’m having trouble with (Yes I know its not designed for Vista :])

Sadly from what I know the way data is controlled in a 64-bit environment makes it difficult to easily reverse engineer drivers… I don’t have any first hand experience with the 64-bit version of Vista myself so cannot offer any advice.
If it were possible to run it as a 32-bit device then you might have some luck but I don’t know if such an option is available to you Elderwin.

m-freak - I’ll assume you’re installing on Vista? After installation and you take it out, you might have to re-install it because the driver isn’t signed. Usually you don’t have to but it could be a Vista practise.
Simply just keep the drivers somewhere on your computer and point it to the right place. If you don’t get the prompt for driver update then just follow the instructions from the Device Manager part of the walkthrough.

Hi Brandon ^_^ When updating/reinstalling the drivers did you follow these steps…
Remember where you extracted the downloaded files earlier on? Well its time to click on Browse and point it to the folder! Once done, click on âNextâ.
Vista will ask a question to verify the driver. Click on âInstall this driver software anywayâ. It will then start installing. Just be patient!
Do not let Vista automatically search for the drivers. You manually point to them instead. Also make sure you have downloaded the correct drivers for your Eyetoy. Tell me how it goes Brandon!

Hi Shane ^_^
Which model EyeToy do you have? Look underneath the black model and see if it is SLEH-000-30 or SLEH-00031. Download the correct drivers for it and slap it on your desktop.
Connect the Eyetoy and pop over to the Device Manager. Find the EyeToy > right click > uninstall.
Pull out the Eyetoy, then plug it back in and follow the steps once more. Tell me how you get on ^_^

Zappage04: You just need to point it to the folder itself, no need to select individual files and that. Point it to the correct folder and click on Next to continue with the installation.
Don’t forget to extract the files beforehand as well! Leaving it all in the zip file will not work.

Hi Dan ^_^ Someone had a similar issue before (I should update my guide with an FAQ) but here is what you can do.
Click on Start and in the searchbar type in âDevice Managerâ and open it. Alternatively you can Right click on My Computer > Properties > Device Manager.
Plug in the Eyetoy and you should see it pop up. If not open the Imaging Devices tab and it should be in there. If it is, right click and Un-install.
Click on the Action menu at the top then âScan for Hardware Changesâ and do the walkthrough again.
If it is not in Imaging Devices, then find out where it was installed (where is says “Unknown Device”. Find it and Uninstall the device. Click on Action > Scan for Hardware changes and try the walkthrough again ^_^
Tell me how it goes for you Dan!

Thats for replying.
I done that. But it still keeps on saying that it is an “Unknown Device” and it puts it in the “Universal Serial Bus Controllers” tab with the name “Unknown Device”
Uninstalled it, Scanned for it, said it was unrecognized. Tried every USB port on my Laptop and it still said the same.
I am using Vista Home Premium (UK Edition if it makes a difference) on a Toshiba Laptop.
Anything else you can suggest? I could take screen shots in needed too.

Hi Doug ^_^ Glad it worked for you too. Still unsure why there are some issues for some as I’d assume other than some other tech stuff all the Vista Versions would handle this installation the same.
Thanks for the heads up too! I noticed that via Google if you just type in “Vista eyetoy” I’m listed too ^_^ Makes me happy that the guide works for people though.
Hi (SB)JD, what program do you use for compression? I personally use WinRAR however 7.z is also very good, and free ^_^ Vista should have built in zip support so you just open the file downloaded and drag the contents out on your desktop. Once you do that carry on with the steps in the guide.
Tell me how you get on though!
@ Lilly - I’ve not tried it with MSN as of yet but will do tonight and will get back to you. You might have to run the MSN setup though to get it working beforehand. What version of MSN are you running?

Hi, I have a black eyetoy, it says SLEH-00031.
I downloaded both to be on the safe side, tried the SLEH-00030 one, couldnt detect it, then applied the SLEH-00031 (having followed your instructions) and it went all the way to the windows security (red windows box one) followed that, then after “installing” it, it says it cannot start, code 10.
I’m using Vista, the thing is, I’ve succesfully isntalled it on XP a year ago, it just doesn’t work on my vista for some reason.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry for the late reply to some of these questions! You will get a faster response if you post on my forum here on eMagi as I try to put them all into an FAQ.
In response to Dave:
This is often a trait that I can’t reproduce 100% but know it exists. The best way to fix this is to plug the Playstation EyeToy back into the computer and then follow these steps…
- Right click on My Computer then click on Properties. Click on Device Manager.
- Under the âOther Devicesâ header, you should see the âEyetoy USB Camera Namtaiâ device. Right Click on this and click on Uninstall.
Now follow the install procedure once more and see if it works. I don’t know of a permanent fix as it seems its just how Windows handles this driver.

Sorry for the late response guys! Remember it helps to post on my forum for a quicker response as I’m building up an FAQ to help resolve any of these issues. Remember though that it is a hacked driver and not certified by Microsoft so you might have to re-install the driver every now and then.
If you get a Device Error Code 10 then try this. Plug in the Eyetoy and un-install the driver. Pull oug the Eyetoy then reboot Vista. Plug the Eyetoy back in and then re-install the driver like before.
I have had some friends that have had the Code 10 error before but upon re-installing its fine.
@Dave: If you only see it as an Audio Device then it was not installed correctly. Please un-install and re-install and tell me how it goes ^_^
@Robbie: Just extract the files on your desktop and when prompted point to that folder and it should work. No need to select sub-folders or anything.

On the part where it says it has successfully updated the driver software well it did say that but it also said it had an error or something so i clicked ok or finish or whatever and carried on the rest of it cos i thought it might still work but on the last step- VIDCAM32 it also said no capture device detected.
Please would you be able to say whats wrong or anything lol,
Thanks anyway

It don’t work… It says….
It said Windows found driver software but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
The required section was not found in the INF.
If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for driver software.

How can I open my photos? It says they are an unknown data type. Which program do I have to use to open them? And what shall I choose in the photo size?
THX in advance.
