The second episode of Shakugan No Shana and it’s already obvious there’s all out war between Shana and Kazumi for the affections of Yuji. The show opens with Shana in the Kitchen with Chigusa, (Yuji’s mother) then a flashback to the previous day at school with Kazumi giving a lunch she’d prepared to Yuji. Shana wants to be as ‘good’ as Kazumi, obviously unhappy with being less ‘domesticated’ than her rival. After all Shana is a Flame Haze, she’s meant to fight not make lunch. Shana enlists the help of Chigusa to make bento box for Yuji so he’ll chose her over Kazumi. As can be guessed hilarity soon follows with Shana’s attempts to act like a “real” girl.

Meanwhile Yuji is undergoing training with Wilhelmina. He’s learning to control the new powers he gained at the end of the first series, due to the incident at the fountain of existence. Wilhelmina is unable to concentrate during training and almost strangles Yuji with her ribbons, due to her annoyance at Shana choosing “madam” (Yuji’s mother) to help instruct her in the art of cooking. It doesn’t seem to dawn on Wilhelmina that due to her inability in that department she wouldn’t be of much use to Shana.

At school Kazumi gives her usual bento box to Yuji. Shana enraged at this shoves what she has brought for him in his face, which just happens to be, what else but a box full of melon bread. Yuji not wanting to upset either of the girls eats both lunch’s and promptly ends up feeling pretty sick. He then collapses in class and the ringing made familiar in the fist episode is heard. In the infirmary Shana and Kazumi argue, Shana enraged by Yuji now being incapacitated due to in her eyes his consumption of Kazumi’s lunch. She then exclaims that Yuji isn’t like other mystes and that Kazumi should stop interfering otherwise he will be unable to fight. Kazumi tries to reach a compromise with Shana but she is having none of it, Kazumi then stands up to Shana and exclaims she can make Yuji lunch if she wishes because she loves him.
A Tomogara appears Shana wakes a still sickly Yuji and they both rush into battle. Yet again there is a feeling of deja vu when a giant airship appears, Yuji then realises that they are in a dream again and have been since they were in the infirmary all the while there is a ringing in the background. The airship vanishes at Yuji’s realization and there is a comical moment when Yuji tugs at Shana’s cheek to check to see if she is real, she promptly thumps him in the stomach.
The pair race through the city looking for an opponent, Yuji noticing that for Kazumi to react as she did in the infirmary she must be in the dream too. The find Kazumi in a deep state of slumber while attached to a giant statue being guarded by someone in a jesters outfit calling themselves “Mare”. Bel Peol then appears as Shana instructs Yuji to wake Kazumi up, battle begins between the two parties everything hinging on Yuji. Due to the new powers within Yuji he manages to save the day and defeat “Mare”. With the world crumbling around them they rush to wake the slumbering Kazumi, then suddenly we are back in the infirmary and all 3 wake up together. Kazumi explains she wanted to see Yuji and that was her reason for waking. In light of their argument in the infirmary prior to previous events Kazumi says to Shana she will reduce her Bento by half, it seems giving Shana a fair fight.
Just before the credits roll there is a flash to Margery who exclaims she has a bad feeling and a familiar face appears in the guise of a new transfer student at school.
The pace of the season really seems to have picked up this episode, The idea of dreams is intriguing and it seems to be working really well. The battle for Yuji’s affections between the girls is really sweet and adds a real dimension to the series. I can’t wait for the next episode to see if it really is that certain someone back again, or just someone who looks like her.
