The second episode of Clannad begins with Nagisa standing under the street light surrounded by an angelic glow saying “this is the city where wishes come true”. She claims she’s reciting lines from a play in hopes it will spur her on to restart the theatre club at school. Tomoya seems happy she’s taken his advice to be more pro-active at school.
After the opening credits we are transported back to the dream world from the first episode where we saw the lonely girl in the wooden room. She appears to be building something, The narrative then goes on to explain a wish to be reborn in this strange world where only the only living existence is this girl. The object she is building is then revealed to be “A new body for me”. Snapping back to the present with a flash Tomoya is walking down the street to school when a voice yells behind him. Kyo who is riding a scooter then promptly crashes into him sending them both flying. Kyo then reveals she’s only had the bike a short time and jokes about Tomoya paying for the damage before zooming off.
Back at school what appears to be the weekly showdown between Tomoyo and Sunohara begins, he goads her into fighting. Eventually Tomoyo only agree’s if Tomoya explains to anyone else it’s in self defence. She then proceeds to give Sunohara a 528 hit kick combo and sending him flying down the dust chute. He then screams from down the chute “this isn’t the end” which leads me to believe this will be a weekly occurrence in the show, also considering there was a zero at the beginning of the kick count who’s betting by the end of the series she’ll be in 4 figures. Tomoyo leaves saying “seeing you guys brings back memories” when questioned about her statement she says “nothing” and walks away.
We are then introduced to another new character Kotomi as Tomoya walks to the library after meeting 2 students in the corridor talking about a ghost girl walking the halls. She appears to be a strange girl surrounded by books on astrophysics and wave functions, later it is said she is the school genius which makes sense even though she is pretty odd.
While back in the classroom, Tomoya is speaking to Ryo about the strange girl in the library. This is where the funniest part in the whole episode occurs, Tomoya starts mentioning about Kyo’s bike but only gets as far as saying her “bi” to her sister before being dragged off. Kyo then flips at Tomoya regarding telling anyone about her bike. In revenge Tomoya announces to the whole class “Fujibayashi Kyou in class E is bi” hilarity ensures.
Tomoya then spends the rest of the episode helping Nagisa prepare to restart the Theatre Club and boost her moral by making posters to attract members. Here is where we learn the reason for the song Dango Daikazoku at the end of the episodes. We are also introduced to the last of the girls Fuko who is making a wooden star in a classroom on her own. I also swear I heard her say “uguu” when Tomoya took the knife off her, maybe that’s a hint that she’s meant to resemble Ayu from “Kanon”. I can see her being the light relief from the other more serious characters.
The episode ends on a dramatic note with an unconscious Nagisa after waiting for Tomoya in the rain for hours, due to him promising to play basket ball with her. Of course due to circumstances he arrives late, a dramatic scene ensues before she passes out.
The series is really getting into full swing now with all the girls introduced. The characters of Nagisa and Tomoyo are really taking shape and I think you can tell a good anime when you start to care about what happens to these characters. Clannad is definitely living up to my expectations each episode is gorgeous to behold the pacing is improving and hopefully next week we will learn more about the new characters introduced. They really seem to be balancing the drama aspect of the series with the comedy. Two thumbs up so far and I can’t wait till next week for the next instalment.
