Clannad - Preview

clannad6

This month sees the return of Kyoto Animation with their new highly anticipated drama show Clannad. Taking a break from Haruhi but still treading familiar territory with an adaptation of another Key visual novel. Visually appearing much in the same vein as KyoAni’s previous adaptations of Key games, Air and more recently the Kanon. The preview shows that they are sticking the tried and very successful formula or their two previous outings, gorgeous visual settings and the “moe” character designs with the very large expressive eyes fans have come to recognise as the trademark of the company.
The preview begins with a quick montage of all the main characters to “Megumeru ~cuckool mix 2007~” by Eufonius the opening song. The spring feeling of the show is very apparent (As fans of their previous shows would know Air was summer and Kanon winter) sakura blossoms drifting freely through the opening shots create a serene tranquillity. To me Kyoto Animations work is all about beautiful animation and this show doesn’t look like it’s going to disappoint, very subtle with it’s lighting and depiction of day to day life with a difference. As with all Key adaptations it appears there is a male protagonist who meets with many different girls throughout the course of the series their lives are then interwoven with his throughout. I am still curious as to if they will adapt it with different story arc’s for each girl as they did with Kanon.
Clannad is the story of Tomoya Okazaki is a third year student labelled as a delinquent and outsider, who one day meets Nagisa and his life begins to change from the mundane he was used to previously. He has dreams of a bleak world where he meets a girl who has the ability to fuse junk and creates a body for him in this strange alternate reality, where they are the only two “alive” existences.

Eagerly awaiting the first episode, This looks to me like a world I want to be transported too and they have definitely created what looks to me to be one of the more memorable show’s of 2007. Lets hope Clannad lives up to the hype it’s generating as it has a lot to live up to when pitted against Kyoto Animations previous efforts, question is can they do it again?
