Sony announces 40gig PS3 for £299 in time for Christmas

Sounds like a good deal doesn’t it? Blu-Ray out of the box, HDMI, a 40gig hard drive and a SIXAXIS controller… Trouble is this version of the PS3 is severely crippled compared to their older siblings. To cut down costs Sony have reduced the number of USB ports from 4 down to 2. Not only that they have stripped out the multi-memory card reader so you can no longer plug in Memory Stick Duo’s for PSP downloads and other nice features.

Worst of all though is that the 40gig PS3 will not be compatible with PS2 or PS1 games anymore. Sony have decided to strip all backwards compatibility with its legacy consoles in efforts to save costs.

This will be a kicker for many as even the current 60gig PS3 has PS2 emulation running so how hard could it be to retain the same technology for the cheaper model? Only Sony can answer this and it could be a move to make more people aware of the PS3 as even now, sales of its older console are still strong while the PS3 is struggling to make the numbers.

Only time will tell if this is a wise move in the long run so in situations like this, it is very much buyer beware…

Sony are desperate to win back gamers over their ambitions games console. The PlayStation 3 is simply over-hype and over-priced despite the Japanese company claiming its the ‘most powerful game system’ available. The games are the most important factor and the lack of decent titles will make or break the system.

Not having fully backwards compatibility is a bad asepct in this ‘low-spec’ PS3 as many PS2 games play far better then the so-called ‘next gen’. But saying that, do people still play PSone games on the PS2 console? I know I don’t but to get rid of it completely is a bad move no matter if it was intended to cut cost…

The price of £299 might seem tempting but I would rather buy the original 60GB which can play classic PSone and PS2 games. Plus it has a bigger hard drive and memory card slots. Though I read some reports that Sony Europe will phrase out this model once its sold out…

its sad to see such a powerhouse of a console going to such waste by the people creating it. They haven’t done anything they promised in fact they promised too many things and are consistently failing to deliver. The psp was first ps3 looking like its following suite. Specially with M$ halo 3 bringing their entire gaming division back into he black. What a stroke of luck halo has been. I can’t see any big games for the sony to hit that kind of cash.
