The latest hit on the Xbox 360 is BioShock, a new first-person shooter from the creators of System Shock 2. Developed by 2K Boston/2K Australia, the game sets out to “redefine first-person shooters” by providing a unique playing experience.
BioShock takes place in a fictional underwater city that is Rapture, which is populated by strange creatures known as Little Sisters (a.k.a. Gatherers) - who carry special genetic material known as ADAM. By obtaining these special materials, the player can enhance their physical attributes such as the power of telekinesis, which are vital to survival in this creepy Art Deco-influenced metropolis.
What makes BioShock so special compared to countless other FPS is the ability to experiment with different types of weapons and also to use special powers when fighting off the deranged creatures from under the sea.
And judging by the playable demo available on Xbox Live, it is fantastic fun. With beautifully-render images (all thanks to the impressive Unreal Engine 3.0), the open-ended combat (in which the player can repeat the battle to achieve different outcomes) and the fascinating (and morbid) plot make this Xbox 360 game something really worthwhile.
It’s already causing much fever in the States (not including a certain toy retailer with a giraffe for a logo breaking the game shipping date) that some video game critics are proclaiming BioShock as the best game of the year.
