Apple unveils the sleek and aluminium-formed iMac

New Apple iMac

Apple CEO Steve Jobs presented to the world’s press the next generation of the Apple iMac desktop computer. The new iMac features a gorgeous 20- and 24 inch widescreen displays encased in an elegant and professional aluminium and glass enclosure.

In addition, the entire iMac line-up will have the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors and a new ultra-thin aluminium Apple Keyboard – first leaked online a few days ago.

Actually there are two different kinds of the keyboard. One is wired, while the other is designed for portability and is powered by Bluetooth. This particular keyboard doesn’t feature the number pad.

Prices start for the 20-inch iMac at just $1,199, $300 less than the previous 20-inch model, and the 24-inch iMac starts at just $1,799, $200 less than the previous 24-inch version.

Steve Jobs also showcase the new version of the award-winning all-in-one ‘digital lifestyle’ application that is iLife ’08.

The major upgrades in iLife ’08 are iPhoto, iDVD, iWeb, GarageBand and iMovie. Steve Jobs believes the new application makes it easier and enjoyable for the user when organising photos, making movies, music and creating websites on a Mac.

The application comes pre-installed with all new iMacs, but as a standalone product, iLife ’08 is priced at a reasonable value of $79.

In addition to iLife ‘08, Steve Jobs reveal a new version of iWork ’08 with enhanced features for Keynotes and Pages. iWork ’08 is Apple’s answer to Microsoft’s Office and with a new application named Numbers. It gives spreadsheet Excel a run for its money!

And finally, the Mac Mini is here to stay. Available on the official Apple Store, the newly revamped mini desktop computer arrives in two basic configurations, the first of which includes a 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo, 1GB of RAM, and an 80GB hard drive for $599, while $200 more will buy you a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo, the same 1GB of RAM, and a 120GB hard drive.

I must say the new iMac is starting to grow on me. The glossy screen looks great and I can’t wait to try out the new desktop at my local Apple Store. I wonder what it feels like when typing on that ultra-thin and stylish keyboard.

As for the graphics card, the new iMac can run DirectX 10 games which is perfect if you install Windows Vista via Boot Camp.

woah the mac boys do it again. the keyboard looks gorgeous. I have a thin keyboard which is designed like a laptop one its got a brushed alloy look to it. they are very nice to type on.

I do like the look of it, but the one you have looks very very good too. If I had the cash I’d be tempted to pick up a bargain with a model before this one.

I had a go on this impressive new iMac in London’s Regent Street Apple Store and I must admit, it looks great when you see it close-up. The ultra-thin keyboard looks fantastic and it is so nice to type on. So good in fact, I brought one! But all the keyboards were sold out in Regent Store, so instead went to my local Apple Store in Brent Cross. Luckily, there were three left.

As for the desktop computer itself, I still prefer the old white iMac look. The silver and black combo doesn’t work quite so well. Either all in silver or all in black, not both…
