Sony announces US price cut for 60-gigabyte PlayStation 3

PlayStation 3 80GB

Japanese electronic giant Sony have confirmed that the 60GB model of the PlayStation 3 console will receive a $100 price drop, making for a retail price of $499. Though it is still $20 more compared to the Xbox 360, not to mention twice as much over the popular Nintendo Wii…

Sony have also announce a new 80GB model featuring a bigger hard drive – useful for storing more music, high definition videos and game saves. Details on availability for this new version have yet to be decided, but what you do get is the awesome Motorstorm extreme racing game bundled in for only $599.

So why the price cut? Flagging sales, that’s the reason. Both the Xbox 360 and Wii have been significantly outselling the Japanese firm’s PlayStation 3 and to combat this, Sony is reducing the price to make it more attractive to the potential buyers. What about European gamers, do we get a similar price cut? Unfortunately no, but you can bet this will happen soon.

So atm game wise the PS3 is god awful. Really I should know, having not bought ONE game since launch day. However at just $20 moe than the 360, console wise it’s a complete steal.

Plus if you could import one via friend in the US it would cost you less than £250 seeing as we are getting more then $2 to the pound.

And again the extra HDD size is worthless to us in UK as there’s sweet F.A. to download. But then we arn’t getting the new pack.
Having said that by the time any decent games come out it’ll have another priced drop seeing as it seems every game on it’s way has being delayed.

Apparently, the new 80GB model will have “limited backwards compatibility”. Which means certain PSone and PlayStation 2 games won’t be playable on the PlayStation 3 console…

How come? The US machine doesn’t feature the Emotion Engine to cut production costs down. In effect, a software is ‘emulating’ the games just like the European PS3.

As for the price cut for European gamers, Sony Europe will announce the news during E3 this Thursday (July 12th).

Also there is a heavy rumour that there will be the rumble version of the SIXAXIS thrown in for good measure with its “touch sense” technology. Microsoft have already announced their price cuts of which I am currently typing out and I’m pretty sure Europe will get the same amount cut too. It’s not impressing the industry however as a Konami exec have stated that they are looking at porting some of their franchises to recoup the development costs spent thus far…
