Federer wins fifth Wimbledon title in a classic final

Roger Federer

Swiss tennis sensation Roger Federer has emulated Bjorn Borg by winning five Wimbledon titles, with an epic five sets match against Spain’s Rafael Nadal.

The world number one achieved the dream result after three hours and 45 minutes of thrilling tennis. Federer looked to be in control with a two sets to one lead, but his rival Nadal managed to break twice to force a tense decider.

After saving four break points, the Swiss powered a fantastic forehand down the line to lead 4-2 before sealing an amazing win.

As soon as Federer took the victory with 7-6 4-6 7-6 2-6 6-2, he collapsed to his knees just like the famous Swede Borg – who was watching from the Royal Box. Even the enthusiastic Centre Court crowd was enraptured by the quality of tennis and gave a standing ovation to the champion and his beaten opponent.

It has to be said, this was one of the toughest matches of his five-year reign at the top of his game and it is not surprising to hear Federer commenting that this victory means something special.

“Each one is special but to play a champion like Rafa, it means a lot and equalling Bjorn’s record as well…” said a tearful Federer.

“He’s a fantastic player and he’s going to be around so much longer so I’m happy with every one I get before he takes them all! It was such a close match. I told him at the net that he deserved it as well. I’m the lucky one today.”

So a superb final – one of the best in Wimbledon’s history – despite a tournament that was dominated by atrocious weather means we have a deserving champion. Congratulations Roger with your impressive achievement.
