American tennis star Venus Williams clinched her fourth Wimbledon singles title with a 6-4 6-1 victory over 18th seed Marion Bartoli.
Her French opponent put up a brave fight with a tense first set but finally cracked at 4-5 down.
The 27-year-old American continued to pile on the huge pressure and managed to break free after an epic opening game in the second set.
And despite needing treatment on her thigh, Venus powered on to victory and another Grand Slam title to add to those she won in 2000, 2001 and 2005. In addition, she collects the £700,000 winners prize money – the first year of equal pay for men and women at Wimbledon.
“It’s so exciting,” 23rd seed Williams, whose season has been plagued by a wrist injury.
“It’s been a long road and I’ve had some tough losses but I brought it together here.”
Congratulation Venus. You are a true star in modern tennis. Now onto the men’s final, which will be a repeat finale between two of the top seeded tennis players, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadel respectively.
