Spider-Man 3 – Review

Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 3
Genre: Action, Adventure
Director: Sam Raimi
Starring: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Thomas Haden Church, Topher Grace and Bryce Dallas Howard
Duration: 140 minutes
Year: 2007

The third instalment of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movie is an ambitious but deeply flawed story. The director wanted to set a more sinister mood to the film with more action featuring not one or two, but three villains taken from the popular Marvel comic books.

By introducing the Sandman, Venom and the second generation Green Goblin into the narrative, the film struggles by not providing significant character development for the three actors playing these roles – Thomas Haden Church, Topher Grace and James Franco respectively. It feels as if the villains were placed in to provide nuisance for our hero, who would later take them all on in separate dramatic and heavy CGI-influenced fighting sequences.

Worst still, the love story between Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson means certain scenes resembles more like a light-hearted romantic comedy than an action movie… At one point, Peter’s confidence in wearing the new black Spider suit (which was infected by a strange alien symbiote) transformed him to a Travolta-like figure from Saturday Night Fever – including those hip-thrusting dancing moves!

Despite all that, Spider-Man 3 still provides some exciting moments – in particular the chase and fighting scene featuring Spider-Man and the Green Goblin – it just a shame that the movie lacks direction with too many characters and situations.

It is unclear whether there will be a Spider-Man 4 as this outing is likely to be Raimi’s last involvement. Judging by the disappointing ending, this could be the last of the trilogy, unless Sony Pictures has other ideas…

Rating 6/10

Even though the film has receives bad reviews, Sony Pictures has confirmed there will be at least three more movies.

The studio’s chief executive Michael Lynton said after the box office success of the latest release Spider-Man 3, there is a huge audience waiting to see the story continue. Lynton tells BBC News, “Everybody has every intention of making a fourth, a fifth and a sixth and on and on. (We’ll make) as many as we can make good stories for.”

Spider-Man 3 entered the record books as the most successful new release ever after taking $148 million in its opening weekend.

Lynton enthuses, “I think it had a lot to do with timing - the fact we were the first out in the summer. I think it had to do with the fact that the movie had a universal appeal, it had a broader appeal than the second movie, it attracted a family audience and brought the family audience back. There were many factors that contributed to it, and there’s a part that you just put down to ‘I don’t know’.”

Lynton did not confirm whether director Sam Raimi or Tobey Maguire would be coming back for the fourth installment and beyond.

Arrgh My sister and her beau went to see it and loved it .
Now I read that Mr Leaf gives it a quite poor rating and says they failed with this movie so much that it could be the death of the spider hero …
OOh what a dilemma … who to believe ? ^^

Poor Rating? It’s not a poor rating at all. Remember that most of My reviews get only 6/10 and I like these films! 6/10 is far, far, far too kind for this piece of nonsense whipped up by America’s superficial culture. When I see films like this I happen to think their not very cultivated.
