New Line Gears up for War

Gears Of War

Yet another movie adapted from a popular video game and in this case, Epic Games’ Gears Of War.

According to a report on Variety, New Line Cinema has successful obtained the rights to make the Xbox 360 game. Stuart Beattie will be penning the adaptation, with Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey producing.

It was Stuart Beattie’s 21-page treatment for a big screen adaptation that eventually won over game developers Epic. The Australian screenwriter Bettie, who’s provided the pages for Collateral, the forthcoming 30 Days Of Night and the Russell Crowe/Christian Bale remake of 3:10 To Yuma, doesn’t deviate too much from the original game’s plot.

Gears of War focus on the soldiers of Delta Squad as they fight to save the human inhabitants of the fictional planet Sera from a relentless subterranean enemy known as The Locust Horde.

It all sounds good but the biggest worry is that this particular genre of adapting video games to motion pictures has seen many projects fail. Examples include Super Mario Brothers, Doom and Halo (which has hits snags before it was even begun). So the outlook looks pretty bleak to say the least. Despite that, Epic VP and co-founder Mark Rein believes it has potential.

“Our first and foremost philosophy is to do no harm, so we debated heavily the idea of doing a movie at all,” Rein said. “But we feel we stacked the deck in our favour by working with the best players.”

No word on the director or casting yet, but there has been rumours that wrestler-turned-actor Steve Austin could portray the leading role as Marcus Fenix. Don’t be surprised by this as no one thought The Rock could act either… Other likely candidates might include Michael Chiklis, Mickey Rourke or even Mark Wahlberg.

There’s no production date set for the moment, but New Line are aiming to get the movie out in time for the summer of 2009.
