As reported back in February, the rumours that Microsoft will be launching a new version of the Xbox 360 console has taken a new turn. Game Informer, a video game magazine, has leaked details on the black and supposedly limited edition machine.
It will feature HDMI output and will feature a massive 120-gigabyte Hard Drive, perfect for storing High Definition movies, TV shows and game saves. The Xbox 360 Elite (as it will be known) will be in limited quantities, probably as little as a couple of hundred thousands.
The accessories (case, wirelessly controller and Live headset) will be all in black, in additional a new packaging has been creating for the new machine.
The Elite will cost $479 and will be a 3rd SKU. It will sell alongside the current Premium and Core packs.
Over time, all the Elite hardware (in white plastic) will take over the role of the Xbox Premium. This means that all future Premiums will have HDMI and that 120GB HD.
The Elite models will run cooler than the current range of 360s, but it has yet to be confirmed whether it will feature the 65nm chips.
Despite featuring HDMI output – offering the best High Definition pictures – the Xbox 360 Elite won’t feature the HD DVD drive, either internal or bundle. The reason? Microsoft feels it doesn’t need it. As all the games available on the system won’t require it.
As for Wi-Fi, there are no plans to integrate wireless connection with the Elite or future Premiums, although this might change.
