PlayStation 3: the cure for cancer

Folding@home

Back in August 2006, eMagi reported that the Cell-powered PlayStation 3 had enough processing power to help scientists find the causes of cancer. Well, it seems that Sony have found a ‘cure’ with an interesting project named ‘Folding@home’.

Sony Computer Entertainment has teamed up with Standford University to create a distributed computer network of PlayStation 3s to help study the cause of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cystic fibrosis and many others diseases.

The new software update for the PlayStation 3 will become available on March 23rd. You will notice a new Folding@home icon on the main cross-media bar. To join the program, you just click on the icon.

The Cell-powered PS3s will tap into Standford’s Folding@home program, which has been in use on home computers since 2000 to work on studying disease by stimulating the process of folding proteins. When performing on a single computer this simulation takes 30 years! But with Folding@home, thousands of PS3s can speed up the process, which is perfect for researchers.

See Folding@Home in action below. Looks very interesting.
