European PlayStation 3 at a lower cost

Sony PlayStation 3

The anticipated video game console, the PlayStation 3 by Sony, is expected to go on sale in Europe on March 23. However, costs are going to be cut due to Sony’s decision to remove a chip from European PS3s.

This microchip is responsible for graphic and data processing functions for PlayStation 2 games. Although projected costs for the PS3 are expected to be lower, backwards compatibility with PS2 games will be greatly affected. According to a Sony spokesman, the console will be equipped with a different microchip that processes PS2 game graphics.

Sony will also further save on production costs by going as far as replacing Cell chips, using narrower circuitry to make microchips even smaller. Downloads and other software will also be available to enable PS3 owners to play PS2 games.

But what will this mean for European PS3 buyers? Potential owners will rejoice at being able to save some money in their pockets, but will have to make a sacrifice and chance that old PS2 games may not work on European PS3s. Best to dust off that PS2, then.

Was this about dropping the large price tag, I’d think not. Sony aren’t that kind.
