Fans, collectors, and comic readers alike were shocked yesterday to learn that Captain America, a comic hero by Marvel who had fought for democracy, freedom, and justice had died in print. His death came as a stun to many; Captain America has been in publication since 1941 with over 200 million copies since his appearance. The patriotic hero is published by Marvel Entertainment based in New York and his comics have been sold in over 75 countries throughout the world.
The story begins during World War II where young but seemingly frail arts student Steve Rogers, eager to fight for his country, agrees for an injection of “Super Soldier Serum” to enable him to fight in the war. He becomes the epitome of the perfect soldier bearing super strength and intelligence, while fighting with great skill and his star-and-striped red, white and blue shield.
Currently, the Marvel comic world is surprised by the events unfolding in the latest comic arc known as “Civil War.” Many comic heroes with superhuman abilities in this story arc are required to register with the United States federal government, as defined by the Superhuman Registration Act.
As a result, heroes such as Captain America and Spider-man have opposed the act, while others such as Iron Man advocate the act, but pitting hero against hero - and to make things more complicated, provoking super villains to enter the fray. Many shocking events have occurred due to the act - such as the death of Captain America and Spider-man’s beloved Aunt May.
On a personal note, Captain America has also been a hero I have grown up with - and to see his death has also moved me. Here’s to you, Captain America, and a salute from a girl who grew up with you, admiring you and watching you fight for values that many hold so dear. I salute you, Captain America!
