Sony introduces the PlayStation Home

PlayStation Hoem

During a keynote speech in this week’s Game Developers Conference event in San Francisco Sony’s Phil Harrison announced to the world’s press the ‘PlayStation Home’.

This free application is available to download from Sony’s online store and will present an unique way of socialising and interacting with fellow PlayStation 3 users. The concept is similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Live but is presented in a virtual world similar to Second Life.

With PlayStation Home, users will be able to login, chat (in text or voice form) and play casual games together such as pool, bowling and retro arcade machines.

Every user will have their own virtual apartment to decorate with furniture and trophies from various games (as a showcase for achievement in winning online tournaments for example).

I wonder if PlayStation Home can match the success and appeal of Second Life, in terms of creating a living and breathing community within the PlayStation 3 network?

Wow, that’s, erm, interesting…..can I do something really amazing and say play games on my £425 console.

Oh wait of course I can, but they’re all crap….or on my 360.

  2. Snige66 says:

Great, now can I play games on this PS3 thing then?

Oh wait of course I can, only they’re rubbish. Or on my 360.

Wow. It truly is incredible to see how far consoles and games have progressed, and now enabling gamers to see (somewhat), hear, and represent themselves in a virtual world where they can socialize.

After seeing this it has only made me want the PS3 even more.. especially with the integrated multiplayer capabilities! I also hope that it works so that players can play together worldwide, too.

I look forward to seeing this in action!
