Mirren and Whitaker continue award success at BAFTAs

BAFTA Winners

Dame Helen Mirren and Forest Whittaker were awarded the best actors at last night’s BAFTA awards in Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House.

Following on from her numerous awards for The Queen including best actress Golden Globes, Damn Helen has become the favourite to win the Oscar in two weeks’ time

And the same can be said to Forest Whitaker, as he won another award for his portray in The Last King Of Scotland.

Stephen Fears’ The Queen had ten nominations leading up to the BAFTA awards and on the night, it won Best Film and Best Actress. It wasn’t a clean sweep by Her Majesty though. Kevin McDonald’s The Last King Of Scotland won three – Best British Film, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay – while Paul Greengrass took Best Director for his work on United 93 (which also won Best Editing). Best Original Screenplay went to Little Miss Sunshine, which also managed to win Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth did exceptionally well winning three awards including Best Foreign Film, Best Make Up & Hair and Best Costume. As for Casino Royale, Daniel Craig missed out on the Best Actor category, but his co-star Eva Green was awarded the Orange Rising Star award (as voted by the public).

Unfortunately Oscar front-runners Babel and The Departed were almost entirely ignored. With Babel winning one - Best Music - but nothing for Martin Scorsese’s film.
