Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 3 will be heading towards a screen near you in 2009, but John Lasseter won’t be the director.
Instead it will be Lee Unkrich who will be calling the shots. Unkrich co-directed Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo but has never before been sole helmer on a Pixar picture.
Lasseter directed the first two Toy Story movies but is presumably too busy in his new role as chief creative officer of Disney Animation to work on individual films.
Michael Arndt, Oscar-nominated writer of Little Miss Sunshine, is penning the script.
Lasseter said: “The greatest thing about the merger of the two companies is that the creators of Toy Story 1 and 2 can make 3 with the story that we wanted.”
His comment is an obvious swipe at Disney’s initial plan to develop a third Toy Story without Pixar’s involvement. But this all changed when in January 2006 Disney decided to buy Pixar Animation Studio.
So what can we expect of Toy Story 3 plot-wise? Initially, Disney’s idea consisted on a recall of Buzz Lightyear toys, which includes Andy’s, driving a group of toys to venture to Taiwan to rescue Buzz, who has been malfunctioning. But since Disney’s now owns Pixar, John Lasseter announced a plan for an improved storyline.
The new plot could be something like this: Andy has now grown up and has abandoned all his childhood toys including Buzz and Woody. They end up in an orphanage but with the constant arrival of new children, it would mean that they would never be outgrown.
As for the voice actors, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen will return to voice Woody and Buzz respectively.

Funnily I’ve never seen any of the toy stories, so I think they shouldn’t re hash this. I remember at the time when the first one came out it was soo cutting edge.
