Kanon 2 (2006 Version)

Regaining lost memories has been the back plot for various anime in the past. None however, manage to tell such a thought provoking story as Kanon. Eighteen episodes in, Kyoto Animation’s remake of the 2002 production of Kanon, is shaping up to be something very special indeed.

Yuuichi returns after seven years to a town of which he has no memories. Staying with his cousin and close childhood friend Nayuki and her mother, Yuuichi finds himself confronting faces from his distant past that force these memories back to the surface. What was it that happened seven years ago that caused him to forget this past? As the story unfolds and new characters appear, very small pieces of this altogether, much bigger puzzle of a dream-like reality begin to fall into place.

Kyoto Animation has proven their worth already as animators and overall producers of anime in Japan. With works such as 2005’s ‘Air’ under their belt, it was obvious from the start that Kanon was going to be out of the ordinary. I was impressed by the fact that they have managed to retain all the original voice actors from the first run of Kanon in 2002, which Japanese and international Kanon fans alike will be able to appreciate.

In terms of eye pleasing visuals, this anime is not lacking whatsoever. The intro animation and song alongside are no less than mystical and the unique character design set on background images of a snow covered town are enough captivate instantly. The characters themselves are a mix to say the least. The loveable, cutesy Ayu with her insanely cute catchphrase “Uguu~!” is much the same as Makoto who has noticeably more boisterous spouts of “Auu~!” when she’s frustrated. Others include Mai (reserved and attractively mysterious) and Shiori (chirpy and innocent genius) who are an unlikely yet perfect match for each other as friends.

Everyone should put this very near if not at the top of their ‘To watch’ lists.
A good one to smooth the transition into 2007.

    It does look pretty good.

THIS is what a review should be. Short yet incredibly informative. Certainly not a pain in the Gundam to read. I’ll be visiting your site quite a bit more if this is what you’re able to produce.
