The 79th Academy Awards nominations announced

Oscar poster 2007

Let the race to the 2007 Oscars begin with the news of the nominees for the 79th annual Academy Awards, which was announced by Salma Hayek and Academy President Sid Ganis in a press conference around 5.30am in Los Angeles.

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel is nominated for seven awards including Best Film, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Bill Condon’s Dreamgirls receives eight nods, but three of these are for songs. It will be interesting which of these two movies will win the top prize – Best Film.

Stephen Frears’ The Queen receives six nominations, four in the major categories, with The Departed, Letters From Iwo Jima and Blood Diamond with five nods.

Little Miss Sunshine, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are outside-favourites after its recent Production Guild Award win. The comedy film picked up four nominations, all in the major categories. Pirate of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest also had four, all in the technical categories, and picking up three nominations were Little Children, Apocalypto, United 93 and Children of Men. Cars, The Prestige and An Inconvenient Truth picked up two.

The most surprising was Dreamgirls not receiving the nod for Best Picture or Best Director as many Hollywood insiders were hoping for. And yet, it was nice to see Paul Greengrass getting a nod for United 93, although it does highlight an odd inconsistency between the Best Director and Best Picture categories.

As for the acting categories, its good to see two nods for Babel – with Rinko Kikuchi and Adriana Barraza respectively. Mark Wahlberg also receives an nomination for The Departed with Eddie Murphy in his role in Dreamgirls. In addition, Penelope Cruz has finally got some recognition with her excellent performance in Volver.

In conclusion, this year’s Oscars could go to any of these talented people. British stars Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet and Judi Dench will go head-to-head for the top honours as best actress (this could get interesting). While Forest Whittaker will face stiff competition from Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Gosling, Peter O’Toole and Will Smith.

The prestigious ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 25th at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, which will be hosted by comedienne Ellen DeGeneres.
