Japanese gaming manufacturer Nintendo would be pleased to hear that the DS handheld console has become the fastest-selling games hardware in Europe, with 10 million units sold in 22 months.
This figure is impressive when you consider that this is the number of units actually sold to the consumer rather than being shipped, unlike Sony who is boasting the claim it has ‘sold’ the most consoles…
The popular virtual pet simulator Nintendogs is the biggest-selling game for the DS, with more than five million copies sold in Europe since it was launch back in October 2005.
New titles expected for the Nintendo DS scheduled for release in Europe in 2007 include Mario Slam Basketball, Star Fox Command, Actionloop, and Final Fantasy III. These form part of the 67 games due to ship during the first quarter of this year.
Nintendo’s European marketing director, Laurent Fischer, commented: “Its appeal to both gamers and non-gamers means it has expanded the gaming population significantly… something that was unimaginable a few years ago.”
