Epic Games’ action shooter Gears of War has sold three million copies worldwide in a space of ten weeks, with 750,000 downloads for new maps and 1.5 million for new content.
The game has become an overwhelming success for Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Not only is it the third best-selling game of 2006 (behind Madden NFL 07 for Sony’s PlayStation 2 and New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS), but also gamers are still downloading all the new features to enhance the game playing experience further.
The first Gears of Wars expansion pack featuring two new bonus multiplayer maps has been downloaded 750,000 times. Though this is not surprising as it’s free.
With a total of 1.5 million downloads for all themes, strategy guides, maps and new items, Microsoft’s Gears of War has become the biggest and most successful game for the system.
