British actress Dame Helen Mirren dominated this year’s Golden Globes, even though Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s Babel and Bill Condon’s Dreamgirls won the two main film categories.
She received the prestigious award in the role as Elizabeth I in the television mini-series and as Elizabeth II in The Queen, which also won best film screenplay.
Fellow film stars Forest Whitaker, Sacha Baron Cohen and Meryl Streep also won Golden Globes for their leading role in movies.
Whitaker was awarded with the best actor in a film drama with his spellbinding performance in The Last King of Scotland, in which he plays Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.
As for Baron Cohen, the British comedian/actor, described Borat (his controversial parody of a Kazakh journalist) as “a life-changing experience”.
Meanwhile Streep said her Golden Globe for The Devil Wears Prada - for which she was named best actress in a comedy film - made her “want to cry with gratitude”.
Clint Eastwood’s Letters From Iwo Jima was awarded best foreign language film.
In the television category, new comedy Ugly Betty was awarded best TV comedy series, with its main star, America Ferrera, winning the top comedy actress prize.
Medical drama Grey’s Anatomy won the best TV drama series prize, while Alec Baldwin was presented with the award for best TV comedy actor, for 30 Rock.
British star Hugh Laurie earned him top TV drama actor with his portray of a grumpy medical consultant in House.
In addition, Kyra Sedgwick was listed as the best actress in a TV drama for The Closer.
Bill Condon’s Dreamgirls collected three Golden Globes – including best musical or comedy, support actor and actresses.
As for Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s Babel – featuring Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett – it managed to win only one award (best drama) despite being nominated seven times in this year’s Golden Globes.
But will Babel have the last laugh? As it seems to be the favourite to take top honours in this year’s Oscars.
