Japanese game manufacturer Nintendo will be pleased to hear that their latest console, the Wii, has outsold more units than its main rivals – Sony and Microsoft.
During the last month of 2006, the Nintendo Wii sold more than 1.1 million in America. That’s almost double the amount compared to the number of PlayStation 3s was sold (687,300 to be precise). As for the Xbox 360, it managed to shift 1.1 million - compare to the year before with 607,000 – thanks to limited supply of Sony’s next generation console and the popularity of Gears of War.
These figures could have been higher if there were enough units on sale to meet the high demand. Due to production problems, especially for the PlayStation 3, the number of units sold looks pretty decent but it could have been more.
But if you look at the bigger picture, the best selling console is still Sony’s PlayStation 2. This machine is still cheap and there are literally hundreds of games available on this system. As for the handheld market, it’s not surprising to see Nintendo DS still dominating this sector.
Top-selling game of the year? That would be Gears of War on Xbox 360, followed closely by Guitar Hero II (PlayStation 2).
Interestedly both versions of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess made the top five with the Gamecube version selling 13,000 more copies.
