When Steve Jobs announced to the world’s press the Apple iPhone on January 9th, video game developers took note in the new handheld media device. The iPhone’s ability to access the Internet, play movies and music with it’s built-in Mac OS X-based operating system could see better quality games over the common mobile games you get now.
In fact, Apple could be targeting the same handheld market - which is being occupied by Nintendo and Sony, with its DS and PSP respectively.
It would be ideal for the California-based company to enter this competitive sector as its products are viewed as ‘hip’ and ‘cool’. The possibility of having an establishing gaming publisher like Capcom creating high quality video games for mobile devices could happen in the near future. But as for now, the current mobile game developers are the ones that are producing these entertaining titles for the system.
“The iPhone announcement continues to build on the great focus that the mobile industry is enjoying at present. The awareness it generates that the mobile phone is as much an entertainment device as a communications tool opens up considerable opportunities for those of us involved in this dynamic business,” I-Play CEO David Gosen said.
As for similarities with the Nintendo DS (touch screen) and PlayStation Portable (multimedia modes), it will be interesting how developers can improve on the iPhone compared to the current handheld consoles. Will we see Animal Crossing Mobile or Lumines Mobile soon?
