Sony have been working on a revised CELL processor bumping up the speed to 6GHz from 3.2GHz and reducing the die size from 90nm to 65nm. This is all thanks to a new manufacturing process and indeed is a common practise when dealing with CPU die sizes. The smaller it becomes the more efficient and faster the speeds it can reach. Question is though will this new, more efficient and much faster CELL make it into a revised PS3? Its certainly a possibility in the future… For example when the PS3 gets revised (Much like the PSone and slimline PS2) the CELL could then be so much more powerful that it could emulate the multiple SPE’s (the other cores) and thus save money.
A more appropriate use for this new CELL processor however could lie in Sony’s more grand plan of dominating the living room. Sony wants to develop AV (Audio/Visual) components such as a Surround Sound and Video Amplifier, Blu-Ray players and recorders and TV’s powered by the CELL processor. Why use such powerful components in such devices? Well it does make sense.

Sony wants to create a PS3 Home Cinema Device, capable of playing DVDs, Blu-Ray, Digital Media, Videogames and more. Remember the failed PSX in Japan? Sony wants another crack at the whip. Not only would the CELL take care of all the processing for the video output, surround sound decoding, scaling, de-interlacing etc it could also apply filters in real time to older digital media. For example that low resolution PSP video you might have on a memory stick, software could upscale, de-interlace and apply filters to make it look better on a HDTV. Anyone owning a HDTV will know how bad standard analogue video signals look. Also the CELL could handle multiple streams of media, so for example you could have a slideshow of images at the bottom of the screen, with a video playing in the middle and TV channels in thumbnail size along the sides, with some music from your MP3 collection playing.
The possibilities are there but would you pay the $700-$900 rumoured cost for such a device?

Haha telling me, I’m going to wait and see about it though as it could be great, or just a very expensive piece of kit that doesn’t to anything great for the price. We’ll see ^_^
