At the recent German 23C3 Hacker Congress an anonymous hacker apparently live hacked the XBOX360 console in front of the audience and got it to boot a custom bootscreen. The masked hacker first loaded the game King Kong and then a screen pops up showing an Xbox 360 logo, a Mac logo and Tux (the Linux Penguin) and the words “coming soon…”. Intriguing.
The early demo and game of King Kong contained unsigned shaders of which could have been modified and thus exploited to run unsigned code. I remember this causing quite a fuss as you might have remembered that the early XBOX360 demo disks were unsigned, which meant that you could have downloaded or copied the official Demo Disk and burnt it on DVD-R and it would have worked. Once Microsoft caught wind of this, the electronically “signed” the Demo Disks so they could not be copied and exploited but the damage was done already - The chance to modify the demo disk to run unsigned code was there.
If this uses the same exploit back then, this this could be massive for the XBOX360 homebrew scene. There was talk before of a possible different expoilt from the XBOX1 emulation but I have no heard much about this since. If this proves to be true then it might not be too long before we see the award winning XBOX Media Centre and maybe Windows/Linux on Microsoft’s console. We can all but hope.
