Sony’s UMD media is dead. Videos for PSP available as downloads

PlayStation Portable

The future of distributing video content for Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) will be downloads instead of UMD discs, according to a report from The Financial Times.

With the failure of UMD (Universal Media Disc) for the PSP system, all video content will be available to download from Sony’s digital video services similar to Apple’s iTunes online store.

This service – which will go live early next year – allows consumers to purchase a movie and transfer it from their computer onto Sony’s Memory Stick Duo format.

There will be no hardware requirements to use this service, which means more than 20 million PSPs already in the market will be able to view the films without the need to upgrade. Sony’s four gigabyte Memory Stick Duo will be able to hold about ten feature-length movies, according to the report.
