Japanese gaming firm Nintendo is to recall more than three million straps for its new Wii console.
The news announcement follows an expanding list of complaints about the wrist straps breaking during game play.
The strap is connected to a motion sensitive controller which is used to control the on-screen action.
There have been many reports over the Internet regarding the Wii controllers slipping out of the player’s hands and smashing into TVs and windows - although some of the photos online are faked.
The strap recall affects all Nintendo Wiis sold worldwide and almost all units currently on shelves in shops.
The Associated Press reports: “Nintendo will offer customers to exchange the old straps, which have a 0.6 millimetre (0.024 inch) diameter, for a beefed up strap that has a diameter of 1 millimetre (0.04 inch), company spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said. The worldwide recall is expected to cost the company several million dollars.”
In addition, Nintendo are also recalling 200,000 AC adapters for its portable handheld system – the DS and DS Lite - in Japan.
The firm believes the recall would not affect adapters overseas, and company executives expected only a small impact on earnings.
