The new video game console from Nintendo is finally here and even though the Wii is officially on sale from December 8th, many UK gamers are planning to purchase the new game system by attending midnight launches on Thursday.
Already, there seem to be a crowd of people queuing outside HMV – a leading high street retailer – in London’s Oxford Street. Nintendo expects the Wii to sell out on opening day.
The release comes as Nintendo advises gamers to be careful when using its new motion-sensitive controller a.k.a. Wiimote.
The Japanese firm has sent out an email to customers with further advice on how to use the console’s controller with safety in mind.
“Hold the remote securely and avoid excessive motion during game play. If your hands become moist, stop and dry your hands,” the company recommended.
Nintendo is taking a different approach to rivals Sony and Microsoft - focusing on casual games with fun, family-themed titles.
The Nintendo Wii retails at £179.99 and includes a copy of Wii Sports.
But for those who haven’t pre-ordered the system, expect to come away empty handed when it goes on sale on Friday…
“There will be a very, very slim chance of picking one up on Friday morning,” says Jason Legg, head of events at HMV.
Rob Lowe, UK product manager for Nintendo, said: “There is a good chance it will sell out on Friday.
“Judging by the feedback we have had from the retailers I would say you would be lucky to get one on Saturday,” he added.
