The Continuation of a Dream
One year after the Mai Otome series an asteroid is detected with a flight path going towards Windbloom Kingdom. Meister Otome’s of the six countries are summoned together as an emergency operation gets underway to destroy the asteroid before it reaches earth. After barely destroying this asteroid in time a fragment still makes it to earth, crash landing creating a huge crater. Upon closer inspection a huge new Slave is released into the wild an an unknown black entity in the shape of a female with great powers start to infiltrate Windbloom and Garderobe for their technology. This entity it seems is capable of absorbing gems and the Otome’s powers that it engulfs, becoming more and more powerful everytime it fights. The race is on to find out what is this entity and its purpose for attacking the Otomes…
Well well its been a while coming as I enjoyed the previous series of HiME and Otome. In Zwei casts of both series are together now with Arika as a Meister and Nina living a normal life somewhere in the world. The animation and detail has been given a bump up as production values seem to be pretty high and since it is a year later from Otome, it seems the animators want to cram in a bit more fanservice as well into the series and to increase the jiggle counter. Is this a good thing? I don’t know but fans of the series will love it regardless.
It is also nice to see Mai having more of a role this time with Mikoto ever present and eating plenty of ramen. Since the entity has already absorbed 3 Otome’s and has a special item in her possession it seems like its going to be quite an epic arc to find and then to defeat this opponent that will become ever stronger with every fight. A new thing you will notice right away is the power that Arika inherits - The Azure Sky (Materialize Zwei Ultimate). This is a unique ability between Arika and Mashiro enables her to become faster, stronger and with new special moves. It seems that it is a descendant of Arika’s mothers latent abilities and the true form of the Sapphire Gem. However due to the squabbling between Arika and Mashiro, it seems to have an effect on the Zwei contact and powers which will be the key in future fights. I’m not sure how long the OVA lasts for but this will please fans of the series and I can’t wait for episode 2.
