After episode 279 took a look back at Luffy’s past, these next four do the same for the rest of the crew. Episode 280 focuses first on Roronoa Zoro, showing Luffy and Coby rescuing the infamous swordsman from the clutches of Captain ‘Axe Hand’ Morgan, and then on Usopp, with clips of the fight against Captain Kuro and Jango the Hypnotist. with the whole of the Kuro arc compressed down to less than half an episode, there is nowhere near enough footage of the superb fight between Luffy and Kuro, but then the focus is more on Usopp and how he came to join the Straw Hats. Seeing Luffy’s rescue of Zoro and their subsequent fight against Morgan is great though, it was always one of my favourite bits from the early series so it’s good to see it again!

Episode 281 shifts the focus to Nami and thankfully gives her story a full episode. This means we get to see plenty of Luffy’s fight against Arlong, which has probably been one of the best of the whole series. I always thought Nami’s story was one of the best too, and the fact they kept most of teh best bits in meant this was another review episode I really enjoyed! Episode 282 squeezed in both Sanji and Tony Tony Chopper, and again suffered a little from compressing down the showpiece fight between Luffy and Don Krieg. Chopper’s story was always let down I thought by the crapness of the villain Walpol, but at least his part in the review episode is incredibly limited. Instead the focus is on Chopper coming to terms with having friends, remembering Doctor Hiluluk and the spectacular sendoff he is given by Docterine. It does a decent job of covering both of them and the reasons they joined the Straw Hats, and there is plenty of action in the Sanji half from what is shown of the Luffy vs Krieg fight.

Episode 283 then brings us neatly back to the present by focusing on Robin, how she joined the crew during the Alabasta arc and why she seemingly betrayed them to go to the World Government. Robin’s story has been the most emotionally charged and a single episode wouldn’t do it justice normally. However, unlike the other characters most of this happened in the last 20-odd episodes so it can get away with it. I’m usually not a fan of flashback laden ‘review’ episodes as it seems a bit of a cop out, but with the exception of Robin, nearly 200 episodes have passed since these events were shown. That’s around four years worth of One Piece so for once it is worth getting a reminder! I thought they handled these episodes quite well, and with all the characters now covered we should go back to the Enis Lobby arc in the next episode, and with fights against CP9 on the cards it was good to get a breather before the full-on action kicks in!
