Japan to get 400,000 Nintendo Wii consoles

Nintendo Wii

Nintendo will offer four times as many consoles as rival Sony when it launches the Wii in Japan on December 2nd.

The Japanese video game manufacturer will ship almost 400,000 units of its Wii console, compared to 100,000 for Sony’s PlayStation 3.

However Nintendo have not said how many will be available in the US where the Wii debuts on November 19th (two days after the PlayStation 3).

The launch of the Wii will see the big games makers Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo going head to head in a fiercy battle of video game superiority.

The Wii, the Xbox 360 and the PS3 will compete for attention on the shop shelves this Christmas.

The launch of the PlayStation 3 was troubled by delays and a serious glitch, which meant that some older games were not playable on the new console.

The fact that only 80,000 consoles were made available on launch day last week left many Japanese gamers disappointed.

It was originally supposed to go on sale in early 2006 but production problems and shortages of key components forced a delay.

The European launch of the console has been pushed back to March 2007, but there are some rumours that it might be May due to lack of available units…

Despite the shortages, it said it was confident of shipping six million PS3s by the end of March 2007.

With the Wii console Nintendo is hoping to win new fans that rarely or never play video games. In a bid to make it easier to play, on-screen actions are performed using a motion-sensitive controller.

The Wii launches in Europe on December 8th with a price tag of £179.99 or €265.
