One Piece 277 & 278 - Ohara’s Tragedy! Terror of the Buster Call & Say You Want to Live! We are Nakama!!

Nico Robin

This one hour special ties up the history of Nico Robin, Ohara and Nico’s mother, Olivia. As the CP9 faces off to the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy screams at Robin saying…

“Do you want to live Robin?!”

Struggling with her answer she thinks about her past about how she was not allowed such a luxury and how she was deemed as a devil amongst some adults and children.

Ohara was surrounded by the World Government as they deemed archaelogists of Ohara as a global threat since they could decipher the Poneglyphes - Ancient indestructable stones that hold information about the “Lost Century”, information that the World Government has tried to erase from history from everyone. Anyone trying or indeed remotely linked to the Poneglyphes were deemed terrorists as they explained that it could revive ancient weapons of mass destruction, thus being a threat to the world. However Professor Clover said that history belongs to all of mankind and not just the World Government and he just wanted to know the truth about what happened back then.

His words fall on deaf ears and the Buster Call was activated - A signal that approves the total destruction of a town, city, island or continent. In this case the complete destruction of Ohara with everyone living there.

Robin (who was still a child at the time) finally manages to see her mother and was able to embrace and hold her hand for the first time… Before being asked to leave once again to survive. A cruel fate after being so patient and studying archaeology to one day meet her mother again who set sail to reveal the truth behind the Poneglyphes. However it was too little too late as the destruction of the island takes place. Olivia pleads with Saulo (an ex-Marine Captain) to take Robin and to flee to safety which he does reluctently. Olivia’s final words to her daughter were that history are people’s treasure and to tell her to live, not just for her but for oneself. Words that echo through her mind to this day.

As Robin managed to escape thanks to Saulo the World Government decided to stick a bounty on her head due to her ability to read the Poneglyphes, a huge 79,000,000 Belli. The World Government also fabricated a story that Ohara breeded terrorists and that Nico Robin managed to sink six marine battleships by herself and thus a huge threat to global peace, all at the age of 8. Being then branded as a child of the devil she could trust no-one because if she was turned in, they would recieve that bounty… Constantly running away with no-one to look to she tried to even work for pirates but they too turned against her, until now.

With Luffy, Zoro, Nami, SogeKing, Chopper and Sanji standing on front of her, Robin struggles to decide her fate thinking that she will only become a burden and that someday they will betray and throw her away - The very thing that scares her the most and something that she would rather die than to experience it again.

CP9’s Captain Spandam laughs at Nico Robin saying that no-one would be foolish to not think that she was a burden. Since Luffy and the crew managed to infultrate Enies Lobby, a place that forks to the Marine Headquarters and the Impel Down (an unbreakable prison) Spandam points to the World Government flag flying above him. To take on Spandam and CP9 is like declaring war against the World Government he declares… So Luffy orders SogeKing to burn it down to show a statement of intent not only to Spandam but to Robin herself.

Luffy shouts at Robin saying that he still hasn’t heard her answer - “Do you want to live?” To live Robin thought it was forbidden as no-one allowed her to. With the Straw Hat Pirates standing in front of her, fighting for that very reason she finally proclaims that she wants to live. That was all Luffy needed to hear and the battle with CP9 begins!

And about bloody time too! One Piece really knows how to draw the episodes out just like in DBZ spending 15 mins just powering up waiting for the toilet to become available. This was a good hour long special though because it clears up Robin’s history and we get to know a bit more about Admiral Aokiji who has always followed Nico Robin. Admiral Aokiji seems to be like Smoker in a way that he has his own sense of justice and has become disillusional with the organisation he is working under. Plus he also told Robin that if she was ever in danger he would come after her after witnessing the use of the Buster Call on Ohara.

I hope though that the next episode will have the battle between the Star Hat Pirates and CP9 officially kicked off but somehow I don’t think it will…
