We took a chance today and followed the advice of a free tour magazine and set out to find an outdoor market that only happened once a month. It took while and was very disappointing when we got there. Only around ten or so stalls of pretty shoddy wares. It was mostly jumble (prehistoric cameras and radios mainly) and dodgy looking food. Not how the magazine described it! Never mind though, for we were about to witness one of the wonders of the holiday next.
We then took a long but worthwhile walk to Kinkaku-ji - the famed ‘Golden Temple’. The hot sunny weather was perfect for viewing this stunning gold-leaf covered temple which was originally built in 1397. It was burned down by a mad monk in the early 50’s, but was built again in 1955 and still stands today impressing all who see it. It really is a stunning sight when you see the temple reflected in the water and seeing it from all angles as you stroll around the surrounding gardens.
Afterwards we indulged in some traditional green tea which is served at the temple. The tea was traditionally whisked before serving and was incredibly refreshing after all the walking we had done that day. The small shops selling chopsticks, masks, sake sets and fortunes also make for a pleasant end to one of the most impressive sights of Kyoto.
