If you thought that the PlayStation 3 is the most expensive console once it goes on sale this November ($499 for the 20 gigabyte version, while $599 for the top-of-the-range 60 gigabyte model) then you haven’t seen nothing yet! The accessories for Sony’s next generation system will be pretty pricey compared to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii.
For example, the wireless controller for the Xbox 360 retails at a price around $49.99. While Nintendo announced last month that its Wii controller would be retail for $39.99, with the analogue stick attachment running an extra $19.99 on top of that.
Now Sony Computer Entertainment have moved the goal posted even further by charging more… The company released a list of PlayStation 3 peripherals and their prices. First up, the new motion-sensing controller renamed as Sixaxis. The item will go on sale next to the console on November 11th at a cost of 5,000 yen (about $42) each.
The Sixaxis provides a 30-hour battery life, according to Sony. A Memory Card adapter, suitable for accessing your PSone and PlayStation 2 game saves, this will be sold for 1,500 yen (around $12).
In addition, a new Bluetooth remote control. This looks very similar to the current PS2 remote, but with added Blu-Ray functions. The remote will be available a few days after the Japanese launch of the console (December 7th) and will cost 3,000 yen (approx. $30).
Sony has yet to reveal the Sixaxis name or peripheral pricing for the American market. However, in late August, the company did register the word “Sixaxis” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The classic Dual Shock 2 name is now dead.
