We all know that the Nintendo’s Wii graphics and hardware capabilities are nothing special compare to the powerful Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. You could even say that the Wii is more like a ‘turbo-enhanced’ version of the GameCube.
This view is supported by Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the Donkey Kong, Mario, Star Fox, Pikmin, Legend of Zelda and Nintendogs, in a recent interview.
Miyamoto confirms that: “The hardware is basically a GameCube. We’ve upgraded our development tools to new versions but you can still use GameCube programs as they are. With that in mind, I thought we could remake GameCube titles for the Wii and modify them to work with the Wii remote so that they’re more fun to play.”
Modified existing hardware and graphical technology while remaking games is nothing new for Nintendo. The Japanese company have done so much over the years, in terms of financial success and family entertainment. Sure, the graphics will be main focus for players as we are now experiencing ‘real-life’ and ‘photographic’ images close to reality. But if you consider the Game Boy Advance is “basically” a Super Nintendo and the DS is “basically” the Nintendo 64 (both handheld consoles performing extremely well in number of sales) then controversy aside, do we care that the Wii is “basically” a GameCube?
