As part of the theme "It's Showtime" during today's (September 12th, 2006) Apple announcement, we see a new version of the highly popular iTunes Online Store. Perfect timing I might add with the recent launch of Amazon's Unbox video downloads.
The new iTunes - version 7 - will allow customers to purchase and download full resolution (or near DVD quality) films in 640×480 (4:3 ratio). Prices start at $9.99 for most titles. Then $14.99 for new releases and $12.99 if you pre-order.
The films are protected with FairPlay DRM (Digital Rights Management) and can be played back on the video iPod or viewed via iTunes.
As for film content, so far the movies that can be brought are only from the Disney Corporation, including Pixar, Touchstone and Miramax Studios (all owned by Walk Disney).
Apple will update iTunes with new movies simultaneously with DVD releases. But would you rather buy a download version of the same film or on DVD?
Nevermind the opportunity to download Hollywood films, what other improvements can be expected? Well, gapless playback is great. Plus iTunes 7 will go through all your music library and fix previously downloaded or CD ripped tracks with an automatic album cover art. Very useful.

BAD NEWS. You can’t download TV shows or movies on the UK version. Which is simply unacceptable. >:-(
