Windows Vista is now at the Release Candidate stage 1, which means it is nearly feature complete and is under heavy bug testing. This is the first serious overhaul of the Windows operating system since Windows 95, especially in terms of its graphical userface. From what I know though it is slightly more buggy than the PreRC1 release however it is worth a shot if you want to see what all the fuss is about. It is about time though that Microsoft has changed the way software is utilised under its operating system however it does still seem to be resource heavy… A full optimisation has yet to take place and that is why there are so many variants of Vista.
The main issue is getting rid of the bugs and increasing the built in driver support for the hundreds of different hardware configuations for music players, printers, scanners, motherboards, soundcards, mice, keyboards, mobile phones, graphics cards etc as well as increasing stability for each of these different configurations. That is where Apple has the upper hand as they only have to worry about the platform Intel has built up so their stability is much higher… In a way its like working on a videogame console because the hardware hardly changes and thus you are able to optimise its true potential. Microsoft has to deal with so many different pieces of hardware which means they have to not only optimise to users with a low spec PC but to those with top end component as well. Considering that PC prices vary from £300 all the way up to £3,000 and beyond thats an awful lot of testing and configurating to do. Glad I don't work at Microsoft as a tester ^_^
Has anyone tried out this latest release? I might install it on my testbed or on this Sony VAIO and give it a go… Grab the RC1 version of Vista right here .

Interesting. But Microsoft might face a problem when releasing Windows Vista in Europe.
Microsoft has engaged in a fresh war of words with the European Commission over the launch of its new Windows Vista operating system in Europe.
The software giant suggested Brussels’ vigorous attempts to force it to comply with anti-trust rulings could lead to delays in Vista’s European launch.
