Jay Chou is set to feature in the live action version of the classic Slam Dunk manga. I myself am a huge fan of this series so it should be interesting to see how closely this follows the manga or indeed just use the name to promote it.
For those who do not know the Slam Dunk franchise it features Sakuragi Hanamichi, a typical school boy punk that has become famous for his fighting prowess. Due to this, his efforts of wooing the opposite sex becomes fruitless and is the centre of countless jokes. However upon stumbling on a girl called Haruko Akagi, Sakuragi falls instantly in love and tries his best to attract her. He find out that she loves sportsmen, especially ones that play basketball. Not one to give up without trying, Sakuragi pretends that he knows how to play the sport and holds a basketball with one hand, much to Haruko’s excitement. Spurred on by this latest revelation he begins to run at the hoop with vigor (even though he’s commiting a foul by travelling) and attempts a Slam Dunk which fails spectacularly but win’s Haruko’s affection.
Little did Sakuragi know that Haruko is the little sister of the current basketball captain Takenori Akagi - A fierce, powerful, passionate and exceptionally skilled basketball player who dislikes Sakuragi because of his thug antics.
Slam Dunk is all about the hardships, friendships, commitment and teamwork of people wanting to achieve something in life together. I found the manga and animé pretty inspirational as the team overcome hurdle after hurdle in an attempt from taking a high school basketball club to the Nationals. I hope that the movie itself can draw inspiration from the manga and do this series justice.
