“In the event of Snakes on a Plane, everyone’s favourite badass action hero can be located on the left of the aircraft.”
That line probably won’t appear in the surefire August blockbuster (and unstoppable hype machine) that is Snakes on a Plane. But the idea isn’t that farfetched; after filming the director and actors went back to crowbar fan-made lines into the movie, as a way of saying thank you to the people who made the film a success before it’s even been released.
Most people on the internet know of Snakes on the Plane, Samuel L. Jackson’s B-Movie thriller that’s basically redefined the word ‘hype’ as we know it. As soon as Jackson signed on to the project, internet-goers made hundreds of fan-videos, posters, bootlegged t-shirts (which have since been accepted by the film’s producers as official merchandise) and the rest. For months people have been singing it’s praises, debating over which lines Jackson should utter (needless to say there’s alot of swearing involved) as he not-so-carefully removes snakes from his plane.

The fuss no-doubtedly stems from both Jackson’s role as ass-kicking, name-taking, snake-beating FBI agent Nelville Flynn and the film’s no-nonsense title (When the studio tried to change itto Pacific Air Flight 121, Jackson threatened to walk out on the project all together, claiming the title is what originally drew him to the project.) Trailers for the film even make the involvement of snakes (albeit jokingly) the main selling point of the movie, namechecking this year’s other blockbusters and dismissing them for their lack of reptilular action.
Will Snakes on a Plane deliver? It won’t win oscars, and will be choc-a-bloc with cheesy B-Movie craziness and gore, but will definitely give the fans what they want; Lot’s of snakes, on one rather small plane. Snakes on a Plane comes to theaters August 18th.
