Yup, the Oscars was this morning, technically, but while I know little of modern film I do to some extent know my games (albeit vaguely when it comes to RPG’s) and this is… intriguing. Via Kikizo via NextGen via Famitsu I bring you the *deep voice* TOP 100 VIDEOGAMES OF ALL TIME!!!!! As voted by the readers of… Famitsu! =_=

Okay okay, crappy intro, but seriously, it makes for interesting reading indeed. At least in terms of getting an (albeit somewhat prejudiced) idea of the Japanese gaming psyche. Some things, whilst obvious perhaps, are still significant. FPS games don’t do so great (understatement) and the same thing for driving games. But RPG’s truly DO rule, which makes N3 (Ninetey-Nine Nights) on the XBox 360 so vitally important for Microsoft in Japan.

Beyond the stereotypes and predictable gaming customs though, what I love about this list is some of the sublime details. The highest ranked fighter is Street Fighter II (20), whilst the lowest ranked is… yes, Kung Fu. The Alpha (heh!) and the Omega, truly.

Also, F-Zero supercedes Super Mario Kart! Which in turn does the same to the rather dull behind of Gran Turismo 4 (which just BARELY makes it into the last quarter). Saying that, there’s no Ridge Racer at all, something I found shocking, but then perhaps it’s punishment for the foolishness that was R: Racing Evolution (grrrrrr).
