Final Fantasy XII

Final Fantasy XII

The first Final Fantasy in a long time to depart from the usual formula found in previous games. The art style and gameplay will have similar aspects to Vagrant Story and the online version that is Final Fantasy XI. For example while you may have parties fighting against an enemy, you will often fine enemies fighting amongst themselves which is a first. Also other creatures around you will take note and also join into the melee giving it a different dimension to the “Me Vs You” aspect in previous games.

The game itself also offers a lot more freedom allowing you to explore without random battles. That’s correct, in the same manner of Vagrant Story and Chrono Trigger the enemies will not attack unless you engage battle, bump into them or they catch you. When the fight starts there is no separate battle screen but seamless action instead.

The battle mechanics also resemble Vagrant Story – You can only attack within a certain distance dependant of your weapon. For example a dagger will have a very short range against a bow and arrow. All this while still retaining full 3D movement of your character to dodge or put yourself in an advantageous spot.

The usual magic spells and attack are also present along with Summons. This time however the Summoned creature will replace the other two in your party and fight alongside you in battle. When the battle is over the Summon will remain in your party until time runs out.

The differences in gameplay has split many Final Fantasy fans down the middle, many love the new additions while others detest it. It will be interesting to hear the legion of fan boys spit blood when this title is released. As for me, I’m looking forward to the changes! Japan: March 16th USA: Q2 06 Euro: N/A
